This is a very recent "Appellation of Origin", although these wines have always been known for their quality, especially the red wines, which have a long tradition.
The production area stretches along the banks of the rivers Miño and Sil. The district is famous for its beautiful countryside, its rich history and monasteries and churches. Winegrowing is predominant on the steep slopes where terracing is typical.

There are 5 subzones: Chantada, Quiroga-Bibei, Ribeiras de Miño, Amandi and Ribeiras do Sil. The terrain is light and rocky and south facing. It has an oceanic-type climate which is softened by the rainfall.

The basic varieties are the majestic Mencía and the delicate Albariño and Godello. High-quality aromatic wines (especially red wines) are elaborated.
